Specialized Signs and Radar Gun Programs

Radar guns and speed radar guns are not the only measures taken when fighting speeders is the battle.  Not always is it possible for a law enforcement officer to be present pointing a police radar gun at oncoming traffic.  Although this would be a blessing and could possibly reduce the number of traffic fatalities every year, short-staffed departments and the troubling economic situation prohibit this luxury.  Despite these unavoidable setbacks, communities like the one in Shorewood, Illinois, are erecting special signs that alert drivers of reduced speed zones.

Residential areas are frequently areas of 25 mile per hour driving zones, yet many do not follow these safety guidelines.  The usage of unmanned speed detection is not possible in these zones, so the community strategically placed signs that say “Keep Kids Alive – Drive 25”.  Funded by local community organizations, more and more residents are becoming aware of the speed limit and look to avoid staring a laser radar gun in the face.

Also available in the area is a resident radar program, which allows local residents the opportunity to take speed enforcement into their own hands.  Interested volunteers can rent a radar gun from the police department and keep track of fast drivers.
